Details of Taxus baccata

Taxus baccata is an evergreen conifer that is used in a wide variety of garden designs. The European yew has strong roots, robust wood and evergreen needles. In spring, inconspicuous flowers appear in small cone form, and in fall, Taxus baccata develops small, red berry-like fruits that birds love to eat. Although the seeds of the fruits are poisonous, birds feed only on the pulp, forgoing the incompatible seeds.

Throughout the year Taxus baccata has green needles and thus provides greenery in the garden at any time. The low-maintenance and cut-tolerant nature as well as the versatile use are further plus points of the European yew.

Taxus baccata likes a semi-shady to shady location and a calcareous, acidic and well-drained soil. In principle, the European yew thrives in any location, only strong winter sun it does not tolerate.

Use of the European yew in the design

The European yew is a versatile conifer in the garden: whether as an opaque hedge plant, interesting topiary or in a planter, Taxus baccata cuts a fine figure in a variety of ways.

In the gardens we have designed, we have often integrated the low-maintenance conifer. Especially as a privacy screen or enclosure of the garden, the European yew is optimal, because it remains green even during the cold season and protects the garden owners from unwanted glances. In combination with a colored underplanting - such as lavender - the straight lines of the green hedge are broken and provide a playful look.

Also as a topiary in a beautiful planter, we have already been able to achieve wonderful eye-catchers in our customer gardens. Our plant of the month is not only easy to care for, but also a versatile all-rounder from our homeland.
