Details of Helleborus orientalis
Helleborus orientalis is an evergreen flowering perennial that reveals beautiful flowers from February to April. Oriental hellebore is often confused with Christmas rose (Helleborus niger), because both the foliage and the strikingly large flowers have a great similarity. Unlike the white-flowered Christmas rose, the Lenzrose often has light purple flowers. The large, cupped flowers open in early February and are a real feast for the eyes.
The long flowering period until the end of April makes the Helleborus orientalis a particularly popular plant. As they fade, the flowers turn green, but the evergreen foliage makes the oriental hellebore an attractive plant all year round.
Helleborus orientalis is considered a low-maintenance and undemanding flowering perennial. It thrives in a sunny location as well as in the shade. The soil should be calcareous, well-drained and moist: Oriental hellebore does not tolerate drought in the first half of the year, but copes well with dryness and warmth the rest of the time.

Helleborus orientalis is particularly suitable for planting under shrubs and trees. But the oriental hellebore also cuts a fine figure in herbaceous borders in combination with early-flowering bulb flowers.
