Southern backyard - garden design with fountain

Backyard with southern atmosphere

This modern backyard garden impresses with its generosity despite its small area. This was achieved by a refined division of space with a few but very special details and a purposefully set color concept. A change of material from slabs to gravel creates a subtle contrast without visually cutting through the space. The color of the shell limestone also creates a warm, southern atmosphere.

Stone benches next to the water basin invite you to relax by the water, accompanied by the gentle splashing with a refreshing effect on hot summer days. From the interior and from the seating area, this beautiful ornamental pool provides a special focal point - both during the day and illuminated at night. The central, space-creating element is formed by the umbrella-shaped cut rock pear. It creates an exciting vertical line in the room and also provides wonderful shade. It is versatile and accompanies with different seasonal facets through the year.

Adjacent slope as a challenge

This area was originally a residual area located at the rear of the house. In addition, the slope in front of the narrow part of the garden came to meet it along its entire length, which visually constricted it very much. In the design planning, the area was assumed to be an independent part of the garden. With the light-colored wall and the contrasting red- and silver-leaved shrubs, the slope situation was concealed and distracted from the massiveness and monotony of the slope.

Central focal points are the fountain and the rock pear, which turn the small area into a space of its own. The strong and large-scale materialization with stone slabs and gravel gives the garden part an enormous importance - the former character of a secluded backyard could thus be eliminated and replaced by generosity.

Points of light through planting choice

Plants were used quite specifically and independently in this project. The umbrella-shaped rock pear plays an important role as an important vertical element. In the area of the water basin, red and white montbretias were used, which set great color accents in this shady area. Behind the wall of the water basin rise various woody plants, whose flowers, leaf colors and structures create an interesting backdrop: for example, red maple, hydrangea or oil willow. In the pots, white-flowered shrubs and perennials add bright spots, such as astilbes, snowball or hydrangeas.
