Close-up of the spar
The spirea belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae) and originally comes from the mountain forests of Japan, Korea and China. The botanical name of the plant «Spiraea» is just as ornamental as its meaning: wreath. Thanks to the flat umbrella panicles that cover the entire shrub, the flowers create an artistic overall picture.
There are around 80 species. They differ, for example, in their growth height and shape, flower colour or flowering time. Some reach a height of around 50 centimetres, others 200 centimetres. The growth habit can range from loose, airy and hemispherical to slender and pointed. The flower colours range from white to pink and red. The flowering period starts in June/July and continues for several weeks into August.
Spiraea is particularly easy to care for, frost-hardy and requires no winter protection. It prefers a sunny to semi-shady location and humus-rich sandy soil. Pruning is recommended in spring to encourage the plant to grow densely and produce flowers.
Use in the design
The low-maintenance summer liana is versatile in the garden. On the one hand, the dwarf shrub cuts a fine figure as a ground cover for both small and large areas. It is also suitable as a hedge plant that can stand alone or be used in combination with other woody plants and shrubs.
It is also popular as a solitary plant in containers to create accents in front of the house entrance, on the patio or in the garden.
