Prunus serrulata, a deciduous ornamental shrub, is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. During the blossom season, Japan celebrates the traditional cherry blossom festival („hanami“). The Japanese cherry blossom has been a symbol of pure and simple beauty there for centuries.
Their lush flowering splendour exerts an irresistible attraction. The pink or white flowers, which are sometimes double and in some cases in umbellate clusters, only bloom for a short time. They wither after about two weeks. After that, the protruding egg-shaped and elliptical leaves, which hang five to nine centimetres long from the stems, have their place.
The botanical name Prunus serrulata alludes to the foliage, as „serrulata“ means „finely serrated“. The leaf edge is pointedly serrated. Before budding, the foliage appears reddish-brown and later takes on a greener colour, although it retains some of its original colouring. In autumn, the Japanese flowering cherry enchants with its beautiful play of colours in yellow and orange.
A sunny location is crucial for Prunus serrulata. It only unfolds its full beauty in full sunlight. Nevertheless, it is considered easy to care for as it is almost immune to diseases and pests and is hardy.
Use of the Japanese flowering cherry in design
Thanks to its imposing size, Prunus serrulata is particularly suitable for meadows, parks and larger gardens or front gardens, where it produces an impressive sea of flowers from March to May. Due to its rapid growth, the Japanese flowering cherry requires sufficient distance from other plants and houses. Nevertheless, as an accent tree it creates an eye-catching feature in the garden.
Thanks to its origin, Prunus serrulata fits into Japanese or Asian-inspired gardens. It can be combined with traditional elements such as gravel paths, stone lanterns and bonsai to create a harmonious and tranquil retreat.
