Details of the shield ferns

Polystichum setiferum is a fern which, depending on the variety, remains green even in winter and does not need to be cut back. Interesting brood buds and finely divided leaflets form on the fern’s deep green fronds. The filigree fern grows flat and spreading and reaches a growth width of up to 50 cm. For this reason, the fern should be placed at a sufficient distance from other plants.

Polystichum setiferum ‚Proliferum‘ belongs to the worm fern family. Shield ferns, also known as awned shield ferns, are very easy to care for and like a humus-rich, moist and well-drained soil in a semi-shady location.

Use of shield ferns in the design

The filigree fronds and arching growth habit of Polystichum setiferum ‚Proliferum‘ bring lightness to the garden. The fern loosens up woodland borders and provides variety. In winter, glistening hoar frost further embellishes the fronds of the fern. The fluffy leaf shape and the beautiful contrast between the dark stems and the green foliage make the fern a very special plant.

Polystichum setiferum ‚Proliferum‘ is often used as a ground cover under deciduous trees. The elegant nature of this fern makes it suitable for both modern and naturally designed gardens.
