When is a building permit required?
As a general rule, a building permit is required if the appearance of the property changes significantly. This can include privacy walls, various enclosures, walls, pergolas, pools or tool sheds. Planning permission is also required if a garden or individual trees are listed. Permission may also be required for changes to the terrain. The details can be found in the building law of the respective canton.
How long does the approval process take?
There are two different procedures here. Which procedure is followed is decided by the municipality.
For smaller projects, the simplified simplified procedure. The approval period is approximately one month. The signatures of the neighbors are required.
In the ordinary procedure the project is published publicly. No signatures from the neighborhood are required here. The duration varies between one and six months, depending on the municipality and the conditions.
In some cases, it may take longer, especially if objections from neighbors or additional expert opinions are required.
How does a building permit work?
The concept is sent to the building authorities in advance in order to clarify the framework conditions and the construction process.
We then prepare all the documents and send them to the client for signature. We inform the client about the status or take care of it if something needs to be submitted later.
After planning permission has been granted, it is possible that minor conditions will have to be submitted subsequently. The building permit is then issued and nothing stands in the way of implementing the garden design.

We recommend early communication. A discussion with the neighborhood is always very helpful so that they are involved in the process. This can prevent possible objections and ensures an open exchange.
