Details of the Hibiscus syriacus

The Hibiscus syriacus belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae) and is originally from Asia. This shrub can reach a height of up to two metres and impresses with its funnel-shaped flowers. Depending on the variety, these shine in colours ranging from white and pink to bright blue and purple. Hibiscus syriacus flowers from July to September, providing a long-lasting blaze of colour in the garden.

The leaves of the garden hibiscus are dark green, egg-shaped and have toothed edges. They turn yellow in autumn before falling off. The plant prefers sunny to semi-shady locations and thrives best in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It is relatively easy to care for and hardy.

Another advantage of the garden hibiscus is its resistance to diseases and pests. Aphids can occasionally occur, but these can be easily controlled with simple measures. Pruning in spring promotes dense growth and abundant flowering in summer.

Use of the garden hibiscus in design

Thanks to its diverse flower colours and long flowering period, the garden hibiscus can be used in a variety of ways and is a real asset to any garden landscape. It is particularly effective as a solitary plant. Placed in a central location, the splendour of the flowers will attract everyone’s attention.

At the same time, Hibiscus syriacus is ideal as a flowering hedge. With the help of regular pruning, a dense and beautifully shaped hedge can be created that not only provides privacy but also attracts bees and butterflies.

In combination with other summer-flowering shrubs and perennials, it creates a harmonious outdoor environment. Especially when combined with roses, lavender or summer lilacs, the garden hibiscus creates a breathtaking eye-catcher. In addition, all these plants have similar site requirements.

Thanks to its versatility and easy care, Hibiscus syriacus is an excellent choice for amateur gardeners and professionals alike. With its colourful flowers, it enriches any outdoor space and can be used in a variety of ways.
