Garden inspiration: Walls in the garden

Walls as borders and privacy screens

Privacy is particularly important in a personal retreat in the open air. Walls can be used to enclose the garden and at the same time protect it from prying eyes. However, this privacy screen made of a wall does not have to look boring or restrictive, because depending on the type of wall and material used, such a boundary can be harmoniously integrated into the garden design and blends in naturally with the surroundings. Natural stone walls in particular create a natural effect and are also a decorative element in the garden. In combination with carefully selected planting, a natural stone wall becomes a special eye-catcher in the garden. Each of these walls is unique and, depending on the choice of stone, can range from a Mediterranean to a modern ambience.

However, walls made of exposed concrete are also on trend and can be realised as a design element in the garden. The modern material is a real highlight in combination with lush greenery. The straight lines can be broken up by planting underneath the wall, creating a modern yet playful look.

Wooden privacy screens are a good choice as they save space and are particularly lightweight. The walls often consist of individual vertical elements made of wood or metal, which are connected by wooden slats.

Support and conceal slopes

Walls are often used on uneven terrain and to enclose the garden. They level out the different levels and ensure that the entire garden area can be utilised. At the same time, retaining walls are necessary to support slopes. The slopes can also be enhanced with attractive planting so that the wall blends harmoniously into the garden design.

Seat walls — decorative and practical

Small walls in the garden are a special eye-catcher and can also be used as seating. The wall can also be used as a surface for decorations, containers and lanterns. Planting flowering perennials, grasses or herbs will further break up a stone wall and blend harmoniously into the garden design.

Creation of space through walls

A wall can be used to organise a garden in an individual way and divide it into different areas. Particularly in large gardens, where a boring lawn often dominates, a wall creates an interesting division of space and gives the garden even more of the character of a versatile outdoor living room. Low walls maintain the spaciousness and expansiveness, but the different garden areas are connected by a special highlight. The wall as a room divider becomes a striking, decorative and yet discreet element in the garden.

Lighting the walls

Thanks to a lighting concept, it is also possible to extend the interior to the outside in daylight. Indirectly illuminated walls in particular create a sense of space after sunset and provide a special ambience. Outdoor lights are available in different designs and the electronics can be installed during the remodelling so that the wiring is not visible. In combination with illuminated paths and individual trees, a beautiful open-air space is created even at night.
